Call Me By Your Name Review 🎬

 

Call Me By Your Name, the awards season darling that has shot Timothée Chalamet to instant stardom (along with Lady Bird of course), is beloved for a reason: it is a stunning, intimate, and honest look of two lovers living in a rapidly changing society. Though the film is ultimately, at least partially, sad, it’s impossible to not be jealous of the main character: teenage Elio is a wealthy, trilingual, piano virtuoso with two adoring intellectual parents. (Spoiler alert, they accept his relationship with a man).

Here are three things to know:

  1. The film’s setting, a small Italian village filled with French(?) girls playing badminton, clad in the best of the 80s will give you the biggest fomo you have experienced. You will want the Perlmans to be your parents. You will want to ride a bicycle everywhere. You will want to live in a villa. You will want to have an orchard. You will want to move.   2.  The movie is hilarious. I went in expecting a tragic tear-jerker with a few one liners from Armie Hammer, but these characters are inherently witty, cocky, and intellectual. There are ridiculous houseguests, clingy girlfriends, and everything that comes out of professor Perlmen’s mouth.

3. It’s too long. The film’s one shortcoming is it’s length. It’s not actually that long for an Oscar movie (2 h 12 m), but by the end the story feels slow, and some plot points even feel unnecessary. The movie itself has a relatively simple plot, but somehow it gets extremely repetitive.

Overall, the movie is stunning, and everyone should see it because while sad, it isn’t actually completely tragic; it ends with a glimmer of hope and acceptance.
